Prabowo and German President Agree to Strengthen Strategic Partnership, IEU-CEPA Becomes Main Focus

KABARTODAY,JAKARTA,WPO | President of the Republic of Indonesia Prabowo Subianto officially welcomed the state visit of President of the Federal Republic of Germany Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 11:30 AM WIB.

The state welcoming ceremony was held solemnly and grandly. President Steinmeier was escorted by 17 Honda Goldwing motorcycle officers and 120 cavalry troops. Military honors and a 21-gun salute accompanied the arrival of the distinguished guest. Hundreds of students also participated by waving the flags of Indonesia and Germany as a symbol of the close friendship between the two nations.

During the bilateral meeting and joint press statement, both leaders discussed strengthening the bilateral strategic partnership and global issues. President Steinmeier emphasized the importance of the continuously growing Indonesia-Germany relationship. He described Indonesia as a key factor for stability in the ASEAN region and a strategic partner with an increasingly significant role at both regional and global levels.

Four Priority Cooperation Agendas:

1. Economy and Trade_
President Prabowo requested Germany’s support for the finalization of the Indonesia–European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU-CEPA). President Steinmeier expressed optimism regarding the implementation of IEU-CEPA. He stated that the agreement would open new investment opportunities, strengthen innovation cooperation, and encourage more German companies to invest in Indonesia. Both countries agreed to increase bilateral trade volume.

2. Energy Transition and Security_
The two leaders discussed concrete cooperation under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) program. The focus of cooperation includes clean energy financing and the development of critical mineral supply chains. Indonesia possesses vast potential in nickel and other minerals essential for Germany’s green energy industry.

3. Labor and Education_
Opportunities for broader cooperation on skilled Indonesian workers in Germany, particularly in high-technology sectors, were opened. Both countries also agreed to strengthen vocational education programs to enhance the quality of Indonesia’s human resources.

4.Geopolitical Situation_
Both leaders highlighted the importance of resolving various global conflicts, such as those in Europe and the Middle East. They stressed that resolution must be pursued through negotiation and diplomacy to maintain global peace and stability.

President Prabowo affirmed that this state visit holds significant meaning for both nations and reflects the increasingly close Indonesia–Germany relationship across various strategic sectors.

WPO President Expresses Full Support for Peace Agreement_

WPO President Prof. Dr. Bambang Herry Purnomo, SH., MH., expressed full support for the strategic agreement between Indonesia and Germany. According to him, this partnership is in line with WPO’s commitment to promoting diplomacy, sustainable economic cooperation, and world peace as mandated by the organization’s vision.

“This agreement represents a concrete step toward regional and global stability. WPO will continue to support every diplomatic effort that prioritizes dialogue, respect for sovereignty, and equal partnership for lasting peace,” Prof. Bambang emphasized.

The series of events during this state visit demonstrates the commitment of Indonesia and Germany to continue strengthening partnership, expanding economic cooperation, and delivering greater benefits for the people of both countries.

Accompanying President Prabowo were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Minister of State Secretariat Prasetyo Hadi, Minister of Finance Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, Minister of Minister of Investment and Downstreaming Rosan Roeslani, Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, Minister of Migrant Worker Protection Mukhtarudin, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, and Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Federal Republic of Germany Abdul Kadir Jailani.
